Huang
Yaobao, alias Wong Wattanaphichet, was
born in Mei Xian, Guangdong, China, in 1926. Graduated
B.A. from National Chung Cheng University in 1947, he
came to Thailand in 1948. He worked as English-Chinese
translator for Chinese-language dailies until 1967, as
Thai-English and Chinese-English translator for the American
Embassy (1967-1990), as English-Chinese translator (part-time)
for the Australian Information Service (1976-1985) and
as editorial consultant for Thaiways tourist semimonthly
from 1984 up to the present.
For the past 50-odd years, Huang has devoted himself to
the study of English and Thai and his old age since 1991
has complied three dictionaries all by himself, viz. English
By Example, a Dictionary of English Collocations with
Thai Translations (first edition 2000, fifth printing
2005, revised and enlarged edition 2005), A Hakka Dialect
Dictionary (first edition 2005), and New Age Thai-English
Dictionary (first edition March 2006, foreign learners
edition May 2006). In addition, Huang has written numerous
articles about Thailand for Thaiways magazine.
It is learned that Huang’s application for naturalization
has been approved and signed by His Majesty the King,
The date of signature was 9 June 2006, the very day of
the grandly celebrated 60th anniversary of the King’s
accession to the throne. |
