Relative Clauses
เมื่อ relative clause ถูกใช้เสมือน nouns ตัว relative pronouns มักใช้ควบคู่กับ adverb “ever” ในประโยคตัวอย่างต่อไปนี้ relative clause ทำหน้าที่เป็นประธานของประโยค
- Whoever says so is a liar.
- What you said is quite true.
- What puzzled me is how he got the money.
บางครั้งก็ใช้ it…ขึ้นต้นก่อน
- It is quite true what they said the other night.
- It has happened what we thought would never happen.
Relative clause ทำหน้าที่เป็นส่วนขยาย complement
- A man is what he is largely because he is where he is.
- He is a fool, that’s what he is!
- Is this what you want?
Relative clause เป็น object ของ verb
- You may marry whom (ever) you like.
- He did not take what I offered him.
- He will take what (ever) you offer him.
Relative clause เป็น object ของ preposition
- You may dance with whom (ever) you like.
- He only smiled at what we said.
- I shall be only too grateful for whatever you can do for me.
ในประโยคตัวอย่างต่อไปนี้ relative noun clauses เกือบจะเหมือนกันกับ noun ที่ถูกขยายด้วย relative adjective clause
- What you say = the thing which you say.
- What he is = the man that he is.
- What you offer = the thing which you offer.
