นอกจากประธาน กริยา กรรม และส่วนขยาย (subjects, verbs, objects and complements)แล้ว ประโยคอาจจะประกอบด้วย modifiers ซึ่งเป็นคำหรือกลุ่มคำที่เราเพิ่มเข้าไปเพื่อขยายความหมายของคำหรือกลุ่มคำหลัก modifiers มีมากมายหลายแบบ การแบ่งประเภทของ modifiers ขึ้นอยู่กับหน้าที่ของมัน เช่น adjective modifiers ทำหน้าที่ขยาย nouns และ pronouns ส่วน adverbial modifiers ทำหน้าที่ขยาย verbs, adjectives และ adverbs หรือบางทีก็ขยายทั้งประโยค
