การใช้ประโยคในการสื่อสาร
เราใช้ประโยคเพื่อสื่อสาร ให้ข้อมูล หรือเพื่อแสดงความคิดเห็น แสดงความปรารถนา ให้ผู้อื่นได้รับรู้ และบางทีก็ใช้ประโยคในการตั้งคำถาม ใช้ขอร้อง หรือใช้เพื่อแสดงอารมณ์ ความรู้สึก เช่น ตกใจ ประหลาดใจ โดยสามารถแบ่งประโยคตามลักษณะของการใช้ได้เป็นประเภทย่อยๆ คือ ประโยคที่มีใจความตอบรับ (affirmation), ประโยคที่มีใจความปฏิเสธ (negation), ประโยคคำถาม (interrogation), ประโยคอุทาน (exclamations) และประโยคคำสั่ง ขอร้อง คำแนะนำ (commands, requests, suggestions)

การอุทานมีตั้งแต่อุทานเป็นคำ วลี หรือกระทั่งอุทานเป็นประโยค ประโยคอุทานมักขึ้นต้นด้วย how หรือ what (a)
How lovely those flowers are!
How well he speaks!
How we shall laugh when he comes back!
What lovely flowers those are!
What a fool he is to believe such nonsense!
สังเกตว่าตัวอย่างประโยคอุทานข้างต้น จะมีรูปแบบการเรียงคำแตกต่างไปจากประโยคคำถาม

แต่ประโยคอุทาน มักถูกใช้แบบย่อๆ

What a nuisance!
ประโยคคำถามและประโยคธรรมดาก็สามารถใช้เป็น exclamations ได้
Isn’t he a dear!
Don’t I know it! You’ll be at it again the moment I’m away.
So this is the way you treat me!
As if I haven’t had enough of it!
